Black hair care question....how long do I have to wait to get a relaxer? Or can I even get one?

My hair has been natural for 3 years. I decided to go natural because I wanted to get back the health of my hair.

But now I'm frustrated, lol. I don't wanna start dreadlocks, so maintaining the natural is frustrating and I want my relaxer back. But I just colored my hair (a light brown color...using a bleaching process) about 3 weeks ago. My question is, being that I've already permanently colored my hair....can I still get a relaxer?

If you insist on relaxing, I would wait for another 4 weeks at a minimum. Go to a Beauty Supply Store and buy Porosity Control Conditioner to help balance out your hair after your chemical process.

well if u get one now your hair will break and might fall out get a treatment first, then a week after you get the treatment relax your hair but now u have to be extra careful cuz u bleached your hair

i wouldn't advise it ...do some really deep conditioning treatments for at least a month then check the condition of your hair before relaxing ...besides natural is sexy!

By bleaching process do you mean just an ordinary hair dye?

I colour my hair using a permanant dye..I was told by my hairdresser to wait approx 4 weeks after doing so..before I can relax my hair.

It's enough time to let your hair bounce back from the dye chemicals.

No, don't relax your hair. You may simply cut it if you wish. Braiding is also great. I just personally don't like anything that artificially alters the hair (like relaxing or extending).

Hello, I am a cosmetologist. Bleach stresses the hair more than regular hair color. It is fine to relax your hair, but at least your first one needs to be done professionally. Wait until your hair is completely healthy and strong. You can never use too much conditioner! Pantene Pro V for relaxed or natural hair is a good strengthening line. If that is not enough, you should alternate between a protein and cholesterol treatment once or twice a week.

My mother has been a professional hair stylist for the past 13 years and she recommended not perming your hair for at least 2 months. Due to the chemicals already in your hair perming it right now will just cause your hair to fall out. Not only did you color it, you bleached it. Maybe you should have used a rinse seeing as though you knew you wanted a perm. I would wait a couple more months before I touch my hair because it will fall out due to over processing. Hell you waited 3years to perm it. I'm sure you can wait a little longer. I have a question for you. Has your hair really grown over the past 3 years tremendously or not enough to brag about?

Girl you can relax your hair. If you colored your hair 3 weeks ago, ur cool. It has to be at least 2 weeks after a color to relax hair. But I would go to a stylist to have it done correctly and styled right for the first time. DON'T DO IT YOURSELF!!!!

you need to at least wait about 4 weeks before putting more chemicals on the hair. i only relax my hair, and i do that every 4 weeks....some say 6 weeks, but my new growth comes in quickly. you want your hair to regain its strength from the hair color before relaxing. its the same way for the ones who relax their hair, then color. good luck.

Seek a professional. Only they can really determine the health of your hair and if your hair can take a relaxer on top of color. If you haven't relaxed for 3 years, your hair is pretty virgin again. And to lighten your hair color, there was probably a little bleaching involved. You don't have a choice if you want to relax your hair. Seek professional advice! good luck!
