How do you take care of a Black child's hair? (serious)?

I will absolutly flag racist jerks.

I am unexpectedly needing to care for my 7 y/o niece, who is 1/2 black-- my sister told me almost everything about what to do, except for the hair. I was going to wash it, when my niece flipped out and told me that I was going to make "her hair break".... Real advice is welcomed.

What she may mean is that while it is wet it could be tangled and you need to be careful when combing from the root to the ends. Still after it's dry you have to make a decision on styling; whether you'll go for plats or a type of curl. To save yourself some time (and energy) take her to a beauty salon that has a young black stylist with humor and patience. The stylist is used to talking children thru their fears. Plus her grade of hair may not be difficult at all, which you'll feel more comfortable with after watching the stylist go into action and the conversation between both of them.

You'll soon catch on auntie!

Twice a week wash her hair. Use an alcohol-free conditioner. Let sit for 15 minutes. Put a plastic cap on her head. Rinse. Use a wide tooth comb to style. Keep it braided up. Or go to a salon that specializes in children's hair. Report It

NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER use "baby shampoo" on black hair. Baby shampoo is formulated with saline (salt) which is what makes it "no tears" as well as making the hair feel "slick" and shiny. It is the worst thing you can use on anyone's hair, baby or adult. That said..use a good moisturizing shampoo and an even better moisturizing conditioner. I know that my sister (who is married to a black man and has two daughters) uses leave in conditioners as well when she "combs" out their hair, using a pick rather than a comb that tends to break the hair. Your niece probably knows how to use a pick and can show you .

Just buy some moisturizong lotion such as pink oil mosturizing lotion or just for me it is good on multiracial hair

first apply it then comb the hair and comb it gently because it easily breaks and children with multitextured hair often have tender scalps so yeah SERIOUSLY when combing it take it easy. good styles would be pigtails braided and make sure you braid it all the way to the end so her ends wont break or get damaged

also if you put hair wraps on her hair Please dont put them on too tighly it will certainly damage her scalp and break her hair

hope i could be of some assistance

these are some products that work for my daughter (I am 1/2 white and 1/2 black and so is my husband-our hair texture is totally different from hers) who has very curly %26amp; coarse hair. I use Motion %26amp;/or Creame of Nature shampoo and conditioner (either) for everyday styling %26amp; moisture I use pink oil moisturizer, and just plain old hair grease. I have found that when hair and scalpe are "greased" (throughly once a week) the more it seems to grow and the healthier it looks Hope this helps.

the brand Dove shampoo and conditioner is gentle enough to use on every hair type including african american.....but in case you still feel fearful....drugstores and a lot of grocery stores sell products in the shampoo isle formulated especially for the gentle needs of african american hair.....also if you take your neice with you she might recognize the products her mom buys and if all fails or still in doubt call your sister and ask. If it were me I would buy the Dove shampoo and conditioner and a leave in conditioner in spray form and not wash her hair not more than 2 times a week.
