Whats wrong with black woman and perming?

Im a black woman and yes I did perm my hair at the age of 9. I'm now 13 and its still beautiful! I'm not trying to look white or trying to hide. To tell you the truth its thick and luscious just like before when i had it thick and wavy. But I got a perm for a more easier care. But many questions on yahoo are asking "why do black women perm their hair to straighten to look more white". Thats so silly! Do any other sisters feel this way? That we are being looked down on just because we get perms! I know plenty of black girls at school who have short hair and got perms. BEAUTIFUL! I just dont understand why people are saying that black girls are trying to hide their natural hair. I still have my natural hair! I will NEVER wear weave! But i just want to know if any other women feel this way.

There is nothing wrong with relaxing, pressing, perming, or doing anything else to your hair. It is YOUR hair. Style it any way that your choose. No other ethnic group in this country goes around telling each other how their hair is "supposed" to look except for BLACK PEOPLE, and it's totally ignorant. Black people need to be more concerned with more important issues such as education and finances, rather than constantly breaking each other down over appearances. Wear you hair however you like, and tell anyone who doesn't like it to kiss your butt.

Who every asked that just don't know hair well. Everyone has ways to keep their hair straight. There are White and Hispanic girls with curly hair, who get it straightened when they want it to be straight or wavy. Me, I'm Black, my hair gets tangly curly after at least 6 months without a perm. People have different texture to their hair than others. You don't have to wash your hair everyday, because the shampoos and combing break off your hair. Do something to it one day to last for a few days. Like straightening irons, they don't need to be used everyday. I get perms once every 4 to 5 months, and I only straighten it once a week, I wash it at least once a week. Dirt and dandruff comes from dust in your home, or chemicals like shampoos and hair sprays drying your scout. I have long hair, and people ask me how I take care of it all the time, and they usually think I use a lot on my hair, which I don't. Your hair is like a plant. Dirt, water, and sunlight. In your hairs case, not too many chemicals, water, not too much, and don't threat dandruff, it's better than lice.

Hey, there is nothing WRONG with perming your hair. My sister, perhaps you are one of the very few sisters who perm their hair to make it more manageable. But, from all my many years of interactions with black women the most common reason for putting toxic chemicals in your hair is to approach, if not duplicate the hair form of women whose hair is straight. Straight hair is the norm for "beautiful" or "good" hair. You may fool some of the people some of the time, but you have to get up earlier and concoct a better excuse for perming your hair, if you want to be taken seriously. Your brother!!

I understand what you are saying and mostly agree with you but to be honest I wish black women like you (who perm/relax their hair) were in the minority

In my opinion, most of the women who claim that processed hair is easier to take care of, don't really know how to take care of their hair; maybe it wouldn't matter so much if those chemicals weren't so bad for your hair; I see quite a few older black women (50s and up) whose hair are pretty messed up and it wouldn't have been if they were natural; I see that with my mother and my aunt

Nothing wrong with it. Just don't go blonde.

Everything. For years, black people have been seen as ugly, because we don't fit into "the ideal of beauty" I know people get perms to make their hair curly or dye it, but when a black person wants to straighten kinky hair, it's like agreeing with the messages we are given. It's saying there is something wrong with being black, and the closer we are to looking white, the better. But the fact is, no matter how white you look, racists will still call you ******. And no matter how much you try to fit in, they will never let you in, at least no completly. So why try to be something you are not. Wear you hair natural to show you are proud of the way g-d made you, and that black is beautiful.
